About the event
If you are attending our 2nd annual "Break-the-fast on mental health" Breakfast, you will get to see most of these auction items in-person!! 17 March, on our events page.
The community really went all-out when supporting Reach For The Stars. We received over 20 (and counting) silent auction items to assist us in raising funds in our fight to expand our mission.
Last year we served over 3,000 youth, sharing the beauty of the sun, stars and planets. We gifted over 90 telescopes to youth since fruition, with 1:1 training, hosted STEM activities at various locations throughout Pima county, as well as fed 100's of underserved youth in the community.
As you bid, please remember these generous donors took the time to donate their products, space, and time because they believe in generating donations for the Reach For The Stars mission. This is a charity auction, and we appreciate each one of you for taking the time to join us. Remember, anything you bid over FMV, will generate a tax exemption.
The best part, it all goes towards helping our youth explore the night sky, while creating a ripple of positive cognitive change.
WHY ASTRONOMY?
We are the only Non-profit that uses Astronomy to improve children’s mental health.
It has been proven that stargazing evokes a sense of "awe" which is defined as an emotional response to grand stimuli that transcends one's accustomed frame of reference. This sense of awe when experiencing something greater than oneself, shifts their emotional attention away from where they are (personal worry) to a more inspired feeling (Shiota, 2007). Keltner states stargazing increases serotonin, reduces stress and anxiety and improves blood pressure and sleep. It is also proven that being out in dark nature (if only 20 minutes a day) can drastically improve your mental health and wellbeing (Bell, Irvine, & Wilson, 2014). The studies, evidence and anecdotal accounts surrounding the “awe effect” and being in nature are many and in-depth.
This is why RFTS has chosen to use such a unique and beautiful resource to improve the mental health crisis we are facing today, and the combination of the two, allows our students to Reach for The Stars.
